National AIDS Memorial Quilt Display

FIRST WEST COAST DISPLAY IN 10 YEARS

The Castro County Fair will include the largest indoor display of sections of the AIDS memorial Quilt in San Francisco in more than a decade. Begun in 1987 in the Castro, the AIDS Quilt contains more than 45,000 3-ft by 6-ft panels commemorating people who have died of AIDS. The Quilt was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and remains the largest community art project in the world. The Quilt has been the subject of countless books, films, scholarly papers, articles, and theatrical, artistic and musical performances, including "Common Threads: Stories From The Quilt" which won the Academy Award as the best feature-length documentary film of 1989.

AIDS Emergency Fund has 40 sections of the Quilt on permanent loan from the Quilt's Atlanta headquarters. The Castro County display will include 21 of those sections commemorating many prominent San Franciscans including Dr. Tom Waddell, founder of the Gay Games and Disco Diva Sylvester, who gifted the rights to his musical performance to AIDS Emergency Fund at the time of his death in 1988.

NOTE: Viewing of the Quilt is included in the entrance fee for the Castro County Fair. No additional entrance fees are required.
